Don’t miss Eva Papamargariti’s works from the series All That Is Hidden, featured in the group exhibition Fire Spirits at Haus N Athen, closing this Saturday, October 18, 2025.

Curated by Amalia Vekri

Fire spirits was inspired by the lingering presence of faded pasts. Mark Fisher described it as futures that never arrived, while the past is seeping quietly into the present holding it suspended. Fisher borrowed the term hauntology from Jacques Derrida, in order to portray how lost possibilities and unrealised dreams continue to drift through, shaping the textures of our current lives. For Fisher haunting marked the persistence of unrealised futures, whereas for Avery Gordon ghosts appear when the past itself still has work to do. They are not only remnants but companions, insistent figures leaning into the present. Haunting, then, becomes both memory and a summon, but also a threshold through which what is unfinished returns, to be seen or reimagined. It is this interval, between Fisher’s lost futures and Gordon’s unfinished pasts, that this exhibition gathers. The artists work with fragments, archival traces, ethereal gestures, and half-forgotten stories, turning them into openings where other kinds of time can be felt. What remains visible and what has vanished, their works invite us into spaces, where memory becomes an act of care and imagination dares to rebuild what was once left behind. Fire Spirits, is taken from a Gun Club song. Haunting can be sparked by a sound, an impulse or a smell while roaming into a smokey bar.
